Wombats With Mange

Clarence Point Wombats

Our Tasmanian Wombats sadly suffer with Mange, Sarcoptes scabiei. It is a debilitating and often fatal condition.

The mites burrow under the skin and deposit eggs causing intense discomfort to the wombat.  Over time thick plaques that look like scabs cover the wombats body, including the eyes and ears.

We are treating our wombats with the help of volunteers.  This process is quite difficult but well worth the outcome.

Once we have identified the manged wombat (most often called to our attention by a member of the public) we treat using Cydectin/Fluralener both of which have approval from the Australian Pesticides and Vet Medicines Authority (APVMA)and used under a permit.

We use a pole and scoop method or a burrow flap.

Treatment is over a 5 to 6 week period which is difficult to maintain as the wombats returns to their nocturnal habits once they are feeling better rather than being seen during the day.

This will mean the wombat is not sufficiently treated and may appear several weeks later and hopefully is seen by a member of the public who will let us know so we can resume treatment.

Treatment is expensive and volunteers are supplying it out of their own funds or sometimes it is donated.

Ongoing research is being conducted to improve treatment methods and understand the prevalence and distribution of mange in our wombat population.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any sighting of mange in wombats, usually these animals will be seen browsing during the day light hours which is not a normal habit of a wombat.

Sighting can be reported to Bonorong 0447264625 leave a msg if they are busy and they will be able contact a treater in the location of the wombat.

We need treaters so if anyone is keen please get in touch.
